Welcome to ACA. Adult Children of Alcoholics is a Twelve Step, Twelve Tradition program of women and men who grew up in alcoholic or otherwise dysfunctional homes. We meet with each other in a mutually respectful, safe environment and acknowledge our common experiences. We discover how childhood affected us in the past and influences us in the present ("The Problem"). We take positive action. By practicing the Twelve Steps, focusing on "The Solution", and accepting a loving Higher Power of our understanding, we find freedom from the past and a way to improve our lives today.

i read this and i am like: 'yes thats me'

but my favorite part...well the part that leaves me most comfortable:

"This is a description, not an indictment."

in reference to what a child of an alcoholic has to deal with in thier own personallities.
i feel either damned to repeat my mother or live in misery from my own mind..bleached of my true thoughts and individuality and washed with a stain of her critical and harsh negativity.

    freedom from your own mind
    does that exist?

Yes freedom from ourselves does exsist. Through spirituality. I don't know your beliefs but any belief works great as long as it is positive. I have only one warning of the offered to help Children of Alcoholics; watch that unlicensed people aren't trying to dig too deep. This can cause damage that is better treated by a professional. The twelve step program you speak of is probably best utilized as a support program to a regular therapist. I had abuse as well. Not to the extent that you did, though. I had to seek professional treament while attending my telve step program. At best, however, that program is a great place to meet others like you!!! Just like for me in the rooms of AA.

You won't repeat your mothers behavior if you don't want to. And with the right help you will be able to get past the pain one day that lies within to live a happier life.
