Inspired by Cynicwander's post where he mentions what I assume to be his Myers-Briggs personality type...I'm wondering if there is any commonality among children of alcoholics and our personality types (as measured by that system)? For example, I would suspect that most of us are introverts. Do you know your type?
I'm an ISFJ. You can try the quiz on this website. I think it's pretty accurate since I've had a few therapists identify me as ISFJ and so did this test. Of course, another test might give another answer. Anyway, if you think it would be revealing to try and useful to share, I'd be interested in hearing what your type is.

Re: Myers-Briggs and ACOAs - any linkages?
Mon, June 4, 2007 - 1:29 PMInteresting idea, Chloe, but I'd bet that having alcoholic parents would simply drive each of us to hide in our own ways, according to our innate personalities. I'd bet the one thing we DO have in common, though, is a really good ability to hide things, to "put a good face" on whatever situation we're in, no matter how we really feel. -

Re: Myers-Briggs and ACOAs - any linkages?
Mon, June 4, 2007 - 4:29 PMYou might be right Surviver. Im 27 and just now learning how to love myself enough to express myself in a way that's real and free...even around people I'm not intimate with. -

Re: Myers-Briggs and ACOAs - any linkages?
Mon, June 4, 2007 - 6:57 PMHey, that's no small feat! It's something I still haven't fully learned to do with even those closest to me. I am impressed. -

Re: Myers-Briggs and ACOAs - any linkages?
Tue, June 5, 2007 - 7:21 AMI'm an INFJ... interesting test, so many questions that the answers would change in different circumstances... i'm never all of one thing, always many... -

Re: Myers-Briggs and ACOAs - any linkages?
Tue, June 5, 2007 - 7:23 AMforgot to add... to other comment.... I do that too, always try to put the good face on things, except I'm so used to trying to find the good in my mother and to try to make the best of the situation and be loving and not "judgemental".. that I try to find the good in EVERY thing.... which has led to some really bad relationship choices in the past.... -

Re: Myers-Briggs and ACOAs - any linkages?
Tue, June 5, 2007 - 12:47 PMYeah, whatever our attitudes toward our alcoholic parents, don't we ALL know that one, about choosing all the wrong relationships while we delude ourselves that they're not what they seem. They ARE what they seem, and worse--as we generally find out the hard way. -

Re: Myers-Briggs and ACOAs - any linkages?
Tue, June 5, 2007 - 1:15 PMI agree on the putting on a good face thing. Less so now that I'm an adult, but when things were bad in high school, I faked it really well for the most part. And you know, that's one of the things I've had the hardest time dealing with as far as mother is concerned. She was an even BETTER faker, to the point of completing ignoring the obvious fact that my dad was an alcoholic. Everyone knew it anyway. All the neighbors, his coworkers...I still have a lot of anger, I suppose, towards her for not knowing what to do/protecting us, etc. (though at the same time totally empathize with her situation). That leads me to another question for you all, but I'll start a new thread. -

Re: Myers-Briggs and ACOAs - any linkages?
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 5:23 PMI rated INFJ today. It always surprises me when I rate as an introvert because all of my friends see me as an extrovert which I think has to do w/my Leo rising and the fact that I am super talkative and love people - but when push comes to shove/or the question is asked - I'd much rather be reading a book than going to a party - any day!!! I think it's interesting to see a link between our "types" and the environment in which we were raised. I will ask my therapist about this and see what she thinks... -

Re: Myers-Briggs and ACOAs - any linkages?
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 5:32 PMIt would be interesting to see what Enneagram types we all are too: similarminds.com/test.html
I am type 2 - the helper - which makes sense also as an ACOA. -

Re: Myers-Briggs and ACOAs - any linkages?
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 7:38 PMHmm, well, I'm type 4. Can't remember what that means now. -

Re: Myers-Briggs and ACOAs - any linkages?
Sun, February 3, 2008 - 5:42 PMI just did the test and I'm a Type 1. This also makes sense to me considering that I grew up in a chaotic environment. I always figured the perfectionist in me came out of the desire to make sense of or make "normal" the chaos that surrounded me and that the only way to do that was to do well in school and be tidy. Or that those things were the only thing I had control over...

Re: Myers-Briggs and ACOAs - any linkages?
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 12:01 PMAmondala,
EXACTLY. You may as well have been describing me! I really "seem" like an extroverted person, but at my core I'm introverted; I love people, but at the end of the day, I'm a thinker and a feeler, and I regenerate by being alone. And I would certainly rather watch a movie (home or out) and eat pizza than go to a bar -- I've never understood the appeal of going out to bars all the time. -

Re: Myers-Briggs and ACOAs - any linkages?
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 12:04 PMAlso, I'm extremely talented at making people laugh, and that's one of the biggest things I enjoy about interacting with other people. Can anyone else relate?
